The reserve extends 104 square kilometers north of the meandering Ewaso Ngiro or "Brown River". A unique vista of rounded rugged hills and undulating plains are offered by the reserve. The mix of wood and grassland with reverie forest and swamp is home to a wide variety of animals and bird life.

Game viewing is excellent and includes reticulated giraffe, gravy's zebra, elephant, Oryx, Somali ostrich, hippo, crocodile, gerenuk, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena.
